When I was thinking about what to write, I realised that there are so many topics to talk about, but one who particularly caught my attention was the impact that media has in people, specially on the way of thinking of population and even the legislation. Because we tend to see that when in social networks a topic is famous suddenly it turns relevant and news talk about it, like if there were no more interesting things to talk about. Or even more shocking, when a journalist do his or her job of researching and publishes a documentary or a news about anything that was in a way "hidden", suddenly everyone worries about that and the government quickly starts to do the necessary things to solve the problem. A clear example of this situation is the PAIDOS network on the internet. A website of pedophiles. Pedophilia in Chile was not regulated untill the TV show "Contacto" shows up a coverage on this topic. As soon as it could be posible, authorities came up with a law against this situation. This thing made me think about that Chile was the paradise of pedophiles before this show came out. What do we have to do to change the set of mind of our people? Which event should happend in order to our authorites starts to do their jobs and wake up to the real problems, the gaps in our legislation and make things right?
I think that we are controlled by our laws and our laws by the TV and the TV by the rating and the raiting is no more than popular opinion... we have been having the power to make a change in this country since the TV was introduced to Chile! And just recently young chileans have realised of that and started using this situation on favor of their askings for education. I think that we could really do some good stuff and big revolutions just by knowing how to use this "4th power..the journalism".

Can you think of other examples of this situation, how does media impact in our legislation or things that were not regulated?

I agree with the idea that Journalism and social media are great platforms to let the world know what´s happening in our communities. However, they have a marked tendency to help raise awareness about the problems, but they do not contribute much toward the solution of the problem itself. I understand that to solve a problem, first you need to accept its existence and accept it as such, but that´s just one step in the number of steps that need to be taken. I firmly believe that journalism and social media should re direct their efforts with a view to propose long lasting solutions. They need to go the extra-mile and encourage the formation of advocacy groups with specific and strategic plans to address the issues raised. Otherwise, problems like pedophilia that targets the most vulnerable part of our population, will remain just as something worth of repulsion, as it has been until now.
ReplyDeleteI think a good example is the Zamudio case, because of what happened to him people started realizing that homophobia is actually dangerous. Because of that people are fighting for the anti-discrimination law but as the previous comment said, social media should make their purpose to achieve long lasting solutions to the problems presented. People can achieve great things when they: Present the problem, express a clear idea, spread it and take action.
