How Eating Disorders affect our Society...
We are in a globalized world where the media are very important to keep us informed about what is happening.
One feature of these media is that they transmit models, which are often harmful to people. An example of this is the big modeling industry, it transmitted patterns of "beauty", and they call the attention of many young people, which want to be like them.
To achieve this standard of beauty, most of the time, these girls fall into eating disorders. This is a very complicated subject, is given mostly in women, and in the case of men is less common. There are two types of disorders, bulimia and anorexia. The first is when you eat excessive amounts of food, but then you vomit it, in the second case the person tries to eat the fewest calories possible.
This is where this topic can be linked to our culture, because the modeling industry is very strong and powerful, has great coverage and spreads easily, to prevent children and young people fall into such an unfortunate situation, we as future teachers must promote healthy life, we must emphasize the beauty of each of our students, because being thin is not always a sign of health.
If we want students to care the world, we must start teaching them to care for themselves...
Therefore, we must be wary of trying to follow models because they can even cause our death. Be yourself, you must be agree with your body, with your appearance, and if you want to change something, it should always be in a healthy way...
But I must point out one very important point, based on the influence of the environment surrounding the person. Most of the times these problems shows a serious lack of attention from parents, so they should worry more about their children because they're their parents.
Many times the teacher in the school must fill that void and support the empty space left by parents.
Friends play an important role to support people in their rehabilitation process.
I asked some questions ...
In the absence of family support, friendship and teacher's support, Who will watch over these people?
What methods could be used to create a nice society which helps those people?
A society that don´t discriminate those people?
What methods can be useful to prevent our youth from falling into these diseases?
What methods can be useful to prevent our youth from falling into these diseases?
Dina Tapia Quezada
Interesting point of view, but can you suggest any particular strategies on how young people can avoid falling into the traps of fashion these days?
ReplyDeleteWho´s responsibility is it? your parents? teachers? friends?
Yes it's true the modeling industry produced idea that being skinny is being beautiful, when we all know that nobody can tell us what beautiful is, each one of us should have their own conception of beauty. I used to think that tv shows such as "america's next top model" contributed to this "skinny girl image" but they started with the concept "plus sized model" that means that Chubby girls for some model agency's were considered as beautiful and glamorous as regular models. The 10th cycle of america's next top mode was won by a plus sized model and it was not for pity or because they were trying to make point, she really was the best contestant...then people started realizing that there are different types of beauty, different doesn't mean that some are more beautiful that others, different just means different...Also I believe that things are changing, in the last couple of years "la polar" is advertising with plus size models, showing people from Chile (finally!) that you don't have to be skinny in order to be beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI edited my topic and made the connection with the class.
ReplyDeleteIsabella, i think the same as you wrote here when i was a child i loved to watch America´s Next Top Model but then i started to watch some news about modeling industry and i discovered that be thin is not the most important thing to be beautiful, we have to accept ourselves and be happy!
